Flat-seat swings on flexible suspension (chain or cable) are the baseline option for children from age 3. Restraint models — a seat with side guards and a bar — are meant for toddlers from about 1.5 years and require adult supervision.

Nest swings — a round mesh seat — can be used sitting, lying down, or with two children at once. It’s the most in-demand type on modern playgrounds: it suits a wide age range and is accessible to children with limited mobility.

Rigid suspension (a bar instead of a chain) prevents twisting and seat impacts but limits swing amplitude. It’s chosen for tightly built-up sites where the safety zone needs to be reduced.

Swings are the most injury-prone element on a playground, and almost every incident traces back not to a failure but to poor placement. At least 2 meters of clear space must remain in front of and behind the seat, free of paths, benches, fencing and other structures.

Posts are set in concrete footings, and shock-absorbing surfacing is mandatory underneath. Suspension joints should be enclosed to prevent pinched fingers, and chains should have calibrated links or a polymer sleeve.
